A few days ago, with great pride, I shared that Forbes Mexico had approached me to give my opinion on certain topics of digital transformation and marketing in our region, and they published it! Based on that, I wanted to use my blog to dig a little deeper into what I think.
From my perspective, in the current business scenario in Latin America, digital marketing has positioned itself not only as a channel to amplify visibility and sales but also as a crucial agent of change in the digital evolution of companies. I believe that this transformation goes beyond the mere adoption of new technologies; it is a complete redefinition of processes, culture, and organizational strategies to thrive in a constantly changing digital environment.
In my opinion, digital marketing promotes innovation and organizational change through the integration of cutting-edge technologies with traditional business strategies. The adoption of advanced data analytics tools, marketing automation platforms, and artificial intelligence systems, in my experience, allows companies to deeply understand customer behavior, optimize their advertising campaigns, and personalize the user experience in an unprecedented way. This approach not only improves operational efficiency but also transforms the customer experience, creating more integrated, personalized, and satisfying interactions.
However, the digital transition brings its own challenges. Organizations throughout the continent face considerable obstacles, originating from four challenges: resistance to change, fear of the unknown, lack of digital talent, and organizational silos.
First Challenge: Resistance to Change
As the first challenge, a constant I have noticed in Latin American companies undergoing digital transformation is the perception of threat or risk towards entrenched procedures or policies by areas such as Supply Chain, Legal, Business Intelligence, IT, Human Resources, and Internal Audit. Many of these processes or policies have remained unchanged for years, many of them since the 80s or 90s when digital processes or talent did not exist, which highlights, in my view, the importance of strong leadership and clear communication to align objectives and overcome resistance.

Second Challenge: Fear of the Unknown
Then, as the second challenge, there is the fear of the unknown. Many company leaders in our region lack sufficient training and fear the unknown, primarily due to concerns about exposing their knowledge gaps. As a result, they prefer to stick to what they can control, which are usually traditional and outdated methods, others feel comfortable doing the same thing all the time, or certain people, due to their hierarchy, think they know everything and are not open to other ways of operating.

Third Challenge: Lack of Digital Talent
The third challenge is linked to the previous one and is the scarcity of digital talent, which is the most significant challenge. Digital transformation requires specialized skills ranging from digital marketing strategy to data analysis, basic knowledge of programming languages, and cybersecurity. To overcome this deficit, it is imperative that organizations not only focus on attracting new talent but also on quality training and professional development of their current employees. Cultivating an environment of continuous learning and adaptability is vital to ensure a team capable of navigating the changing digital landscape.
The lack of digital talent is not the exclusive responsibility of companies or educational institutions. The digital industry is distinguished by its dynamism, so no curriculum from any university can keep pace; those who do not educate themselves on their own initiative and do not constantly seek to expand their knowledge will inevitably lag behind, limiting their company’s capacity for innovation. For example, currently, artificial intelligence represents a critical frontier; ignoring the opportunity to explore and master this technology is to waste immense potential. In my field, many of us should already be implementing AI to optimize advertising campaigns, predict purchasing behavior, and enrich the customer experience.

A phenomenon caused in Latin America by this challenge is the false prophets of Digital Marketing or Technology in general. Some call themselves speakers or book writers and others call themselves experts on a subject, whether it’s the metaverse, artificial intelligence, or whatever is trending – they will take advantage of it. But when you really know the topic, you will know how to differentiate between those who truly master a subject and those who don’t and are taking advantage of the market’s ignorance. These are the ones you have to be most careful with because all they want is to take your money for pure smoke and mirrors. That’s why it’s also important to have solid judgment to navigate safely through these dangerous and uncertain waters.

Some of these false prophets call themselves speakers or book writers and others call themselves experts on a subject, whether it’s the metaverse, artificial intelligence, or whatever is trending.
Fourth and Last Challenge: Organizational Silos
Finally, the final challenge that I believe is the product of the previous three is organizational silos. The effective implementation of integrated digital marketing strategies is often hampered by the lack of collaboration between departments, which makes breaking these silos, lowering those barriers, and fostering a collaborative approach crucial for a successful transformation.

In summary, I believe that digital marketing constitutes the core of digital evolution, playing an essential role in reconfiguring business strategies to adapt to the digital world. Addressing internal challenges and the scarcity of specialized talent demands an organizational commitment to change, collaboration between departments, and a sustained investment in professional development. By proactively facing these challenges, companies can unleash the potential of digital marketing to foster innovation, improve the customer experience, and consolidate a competitive advantage in the digital era.
Regardless of the field in which you work, I invite everyone to constantly commit to learning, highlighting how crucial it is to keep our passion for discovery and continuous advancement burning.
Since my youth, the phrase “Stay Hungry” has been an echo in my life, a constant reminder to never settle. I encourage you to always seek to improve, to be competitive, and to stay active in the pursuit of your goals, always striving to reach your maximum potential. The real challenge for organizations lies in recognizing the wealth found in adaptability and the continuous pursuit of knowledge. In a rapidly evolving world, clinging to practices that no longer serve us simply because they are comfortable or familiar limits our growth and that of our companies.
The invitation is to embrace change, to educate ourselves, and to innovate constantly, understanding that learning never ends and that each day offers an opportunity to improve and transform our reality and that of those around us. Adaptation and innovation are not only necessities but also exciting opportunities to advance and prosper in the digital era.
To conclude this post and the expansion of reflections I’ve shared with Forbes, I want to express the profound satisfaction derived from participating in such a prestigious publication.

This experience has profoundly deepened my gratitude for the journey that brought me here. Professionally, I am immensely thankful to all the leaders who have guided me and profoundly influenced my growth throughout my career. I hold deep gratitude for Jamie, my current leader, and Raul, who guided me at a different stage of my career. Both have served as direct mentors, providing invaluable insights and playing a pivotal role in my professional development.
On a personal level, I am grateful to my parents, who instilled in me the values necessary to persevere. My brother Ernesto, to whom I rarely express this, has been my role model since I can remember. My wife Andrea, the pillar of my life, is the only one who knows how to lift me up and keep me moving forward. And my daughter Marcela, who since her birth has become my perpetual motivation for everything I do in life.
Stay hungry,
